Happy Holidays!

A short post but one a few of you will (I think) appreciate. First we have Sebastian getting into the holiday spirit:

Next we have one from way back in November (at the old apartment) when Sebastian made his very own spaceship.

Enjoy!

‘nother video

Here’s a short video AM captured yesterday. Enjoy.

Insight…

Sebastian was explaining how he created a Lego Transformer to Anna-Marie the other day:

Children are tiny and we have a lot of ideas. Children have much better ideas than adults you know. When you’re an adult, you don’t have so many ideas.

He may be right.

Been too long…

2008_02_17 049

So it’s been nearly a month since we’ve posted any photos, but in order to make up for it there are over 100 new photos up in the January & February 2008 galleries. There are quite a few from our recent trips to Santa Monica (last weekend), Rancho Cucamonga (this Saturday) and Long Beach (yesterday). Give ‘em a gander when you have time and enjoy…

On another Sebastian-related note: The other day while AM was on the phone with me (I was at work, as usual) he asked her, “Can I stop taking baths forever and just clean myself like a cat?” He then proceeded to go through the motions of feline-bathing… So far it’s been working okay…

Musical tastes

So this morning Sebastian wanted to listen to my iPod so I set it up with some REM (which I know he likes) and went to make his breakfast. As I was waiting for his toast to toast I came into the living room and he was sitting in the rocking chair looking slightly dejected. “Is everything okay?” I asked. “Yeah,” he said rather unconvincingly. “What’s the matter?” I probed. “I can’t find the song I want,” he replied. “Which song is that?” He responded by humming a little and I didn’t recognize the tune. I asked again and once more he hummed some more but to no avail. “How does it go?” I ventured. “I’m sorry,” he sang, “I’m sorry…”Ahhh , yes. “South Central Rain,” I said, and I found the song & gave him the headphones. He settled back into the chair and I went to finish preparing his toast with apple butter. That’s one of my favorite songs, too.

Too funny…

I received an email from AM just now relating another Sebastian-ism:

a few minutes ago, sebastian started singing “this old man”, and then he stopped abruptly to ask me, “mama, how do you play knick knack?” i thought that was TOO FUNNY!i said i didn’t know how to play, and he said, “i don’t think it’s a real game”, and i agreed.

I love the way his mind works…

Christmas Eve

2007_12_23 025

Yay! Christms is almost here and Sebastian is so very excited. He told us this morning that he’s “going to burst out of bed and run to the Christmas tree!” After years of getting my parents up at 4:30 AM every Christmas morning I think the payback is about to begin. Merry Christmas!

Holly Jolly Christmas (& more)

Well, yesterday was a day filled with errands and preparations for the upcoming holiday. The biggest task was getting the tree which we’ve been putting off for a couple of weeks. The United Melon tree auction was not set up in Chinatown this year so we were forced to venture out to South Pasadena for an overpriced four-footer. Even though we paid as much for that, however, the cost was well worth it because it was much easier to transport home than last year’s six-foot-plus that Sebastian & I lugged on the Gold Line to the Red Line – I swear I thought it was small, but when we got home AM was amazed and it reached the ceiling! I don’t know how I carried it, and I can somewhat understand the laughter & looks of amazement as I walked the streets of downtown.

On our way to Pasadena we stopped at Union Station and Sebastian & I waited for AM to, uh, powder her nose, we looked at the “River Fountain, ” which is about ten feet long with water pouring into either end. The “river bed” is adorned with artifacts found at the site of “old Chinatown,” which is where they built Union Station itself. As we looked at all the stuff Sebastian let out an “ewwwww” and pointed at 2 cigarette butts at the bottom and said, “Yuck! Look, somebody put those things they use to shoot fire into their mouths in there!” It makes about as much sense as their real use, doesn’t it?

Today we’ll be decorating the tree and getting in the holiday spirit some more… If we head out we’ll be sure to bundle up because, like Ohio, we’re in the midst of a cold spell with a high of *gasp* 66! Real weenie-shrinking weather, let me tell you!

catch up

It’s been a while & Sebastian has been entertaining & surprising us daily with his antics & his vocabulary. His speech teacher Linda was surprised the other week at his session when she asked him a question & he replied thoughtfully, “It’s rather difficult.” He has also begun to work in elaborate hand gestures when he is explaining things or relating a story — they are fairly exaggerated but lots of fun to watch. Some other stuff:

  • “O-I-E-Y-O” This is what Sebastian wrote (by himself) on the shower door during his bath the other night. It took me a little while, but I finally realized that he was writing “Ohio”! With no help!
  • After our trip to the Petersen Automotive Museum yesterday we stopped at Office Depot to look around. Sebastian positioned himself behind one of the executive-style desks and welcomed us into his office. “What can I do for you?” he asked AM, who said that she needed a raise. “Well, let’s make a deal,” he said. They went through the charade again and his reply changed to, “I’ll try to make that happen.” We have no idea where these came from as, honestly, we don’t speak that way nor do we play “office” frequently (or ever, as far as I know). Too funny.
  • Sebastian asked AM yesterday how people are made. While we scrambled for an explanation suitable for a four-year-old he answered himself, saying, “I know how people are made. Someone put seeds in the ground, put dirt over them & patted it down & watered it. Then they started to grow.”

I’m sure that there is more, but those are the standouts from the past week or so. There are some new pictures up from the past 2 weeks, including Sebastian’s end-of-year recital at preschool and some really great cars from the aforementioned trip to the car museum yesterday. Enjoy!

New Sebastian-isms

Some new phrases from our budding linguist:

  • Yesternight.Sebastian used this when talking to AM last week about the previous night (“Remember when daddy did something funny yesternight?”) You can’t argue with the logic and I think it should be added to our lexicon.
  • “…you know.” He’s been using this phrase a lot lately, tacking it onto the end of his statements: “There are a lot of marbles in there you know.”
  • At breakfast yesterday Sebastian & I were sitting at the dining table and he saw his Chutes & Ladders game and asked if I’d like to play after we finished eating. “Do you prefer it?” he asked. “Prefer it to what?” I countered. “Do you prefer to play it?” I didn’t press the point further but was quite amused with his comment. He won, by the way.

More to come I’m sure – he’s picking up more & more each day!
